Community Rotation
Experience Momentum
My community rotation took place at Experience Momentum - Lynnwood which is a B-corp certified clinic that houses registered dietitian-nutritionists as well as physical therapy, therapeutic massage, and fitness classes. Their mission is to: “educate, support, empower, and connect with our clients to create breakthroughs in their lives.” They do this by working as an interdisciplinary team to help clients work on lifestyle changes, injury recovery, athletic training and more. This is a for-profit business that gets funding from insurance reimbursement and cash pay clients. Clients come from a wide variety of places, some types of nutritional counseling I have seen includes: athletes, celiac disease recovery, injury recovery, and health at every size clients. Anyone is eligible to come in, they take most major insurances and cash pay is kept reasonable.

Health Promotion and Wellness
For my health promotion and wellness project I worked on helping to strengthen Experience Momentum’s pre and post operative nutrition program. We began by using my web design skills to create and send-out a survey to patients who have already undergone the program to assess what is working, and what can be improved. I ran a SMOG report on their Pre and Post Operative Care Plan Booklet to help increase readability on the next printing. I completed the BRFSS report on fall risk in the elderly population as this is a common concern that can lead patients into needing surgery and being referred to EM for physical therapy. The last step was to present the research about nutrition care and surgery and some of the survey results to the interdisciplinary team to help them gain a better understanding of the program and hopefully increase referrals.

Counseling. Motivational Interviewing, and Communicating with the Public
In addition to observing, assisting in, and leading outpatient nutrition intervention appointments; I was able to develop a handout for use with their clients. I chose Health at Every Size because its a topic I am passionate about and feel strongly that it would be a benefit to their weight-loss clients. Many of them come in with fears of change and have yo-yo dieted their entire lives. I also did a instagram takeover to talk about what a dietetic intern is and show a day in the life of an intern; I also answered simple evidence-based questions.

Evidence Based Research
Both my health promotion and wellness project, as well as my HAES handout required me to use evidence-based education materials and cite all sources. Additionally, I worked with the team to do further research for helping patients with celiac disease, spinal lipoma, and type-II diabetes by sourcing peer-reviewed studies that may be of interest.
